Published on the occasion of Wael Shawky’s exhibition at Talbot Rice Gallery, as part of Edinburgh International Festival in 2025, produced in partnership with Edinburgh University Press. With a conversation with the artist and newly commissioned texts by leading cultural commentators and academics including Melissa Gronlund, Ibrahim Nehme (Director, Beirut Art Center); Prof Olga Taxidou (Professor Emerita of Drama and Performance Studies, University of Edinburgh); Dr Anthony Gorman (Senior Lecturer in Modern Middle Eastern History) and Prof Tessa Giblin (Director of Talbot Rice Gallery).
It will be the first publication to reflect on Shawky’s critically acclaimed Drama 1882 and Cabaret Crusades series together- and will be richly illustrated with artwork and installation images, film stills and reference the Heritage Collection items selected by Wael Shawky that were included in the exhibition, in addition to archival materials compiled by Dr Anthony Gorman, which were published in Egypt and around the world around the time of the Urabi uprising.
