As part of Edinburgh College of Art, one of Talbot Rice Gallery’s core purposes is to offer a unique service to students across the University of Edinburgh and beyond –the opportunity to learn first-hand from a working contemporary art gallery.  We use our exhibitions as a springboard to inspire and empower students Through engaging introductions, guided tours, workshops, presentations, and lectures, we enhance learning experiences. Our student-centred creative programme sparks curiosity, encourage hands-on engagement with contemporary art, support wellbeing, and help students develop their creativity while fostering connections with peers.

After-hours Making

Afterhours Making
As part of our students’ wellbeing and connection programme, we hosted an Afterhours Making event in the gallery, offering a relaxed, informal space for creativity and social connection. Following an introduction to the exhibition, participants explored the galleries before creating their own artworks using a range of materials provided.

The session welcomed both experienced artists and beginners, encouraging experimentation, play and personal expression. The evening resulted in a diverse range of thoughtful works, including paper cameras inspired by childhood memories, sculptures representing children, and pieces exploring themes of healing and reflection. It was a creative and inspiring night.

Yoga

Student Yoga
As part of our students’ wellbeing and connection programme, we hosted an evening yoga session, offering University of Edinburgh students a space to pause, reflect and reconnect during the demands of busy student life. The unique gallery environment provided a calm and inspiring backdrop, where participants moved gently through breath work and guided practice, drawing on themes of play, presence and imagination reflected in the artworks around them.

Sonny’s warm and welcoming approach helped create a sense of ease and belonging, encouraging students to feel at home in their bodies. The session offered a valuable opportunity to step back, restore balance, and reconnect with a sense of community and self.
